Invocatio:
P. In nomine Patris, et + Filii et Spiritus Sancti.  Amen.   (In the name of the father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Ghost.  Amen. )

Confiteor:
A. O Lord, Thou hast created man to be immortal and made him to be an image of Thine own eternity; yet often we forget the glory of our heritage and wander from the path which leads to righteousness.  But Thou, O Lord, hast made us for Thyself and our hearts are ever restless till they find their rest in Thee.  Look with the eyes of Thy love upon our manifold imperfections and pardon all our shortcomings, that we may be filled with the brightness of the everlasting light and become the unspotted mirror of Thy power and the image of Thy goodness;  Through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

Absolutio:
P. Deus Pater, Deus + Filius, Deus Spiritus Sanctus, vos benedicat, custodiat atque sanctificet; Dominus in clementia sua respiciat supra vos et misereatur vestri; Dominus vos + absolvet ab omnibus peccatis vestris, vobisque gratiam det Spiritus Sancti et confirmationem.  Amen.  (God the Father, God the + Son, God the Holy Ghost, bless, preserve and sanctify you; the Lord in His lovingkindness look down upon you and be gracious unto you; the Lord + absolve you from all your sins and grant you the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.)

21st Sunday after Pentecost  –  13th  October 2013 (Colour of Celebration – Green)
Intent: Perseverance
Lord of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things, may our hearts be so filled with gratitude to thee that we may continually increase in true religion and from thine omnipotence may we draw strength to persevere; through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

God is good towards us; let us be the same towards our brethren.  If we pardon our brethren from the bottom of our hearts, our Lord Jesus Christ will remit our debts.

Commemoration of the Saints, for the coming week
Sunday October 13th
St Edward, Confessor.
The King-Confessor was a grandson of St Edward.  King and martyr, and the last but one of the Anglo-Saxon Kings of England.  He died A.D. 1066.

Monday October 14th
St Callixtus, Pope, Martyr.
St Callixtus I, successor of St Zephyrinus, instituted the Ember-Day Fasts, and provided for the honourable interment of the Martyrs.  He himself suffered martyrdom under Alexander Severus A.D. 223.

Tuesday October 15th
St Teresa, Virgin, Doctor.
The seraphic St Teresa born at Avila (Spain) at the age of 18, entered the convent of St Mary of Mount Carmel.  As the Reformer of the Carmelites, she re-established the primitive observance of their ancient Rule.  On account of her invaluable works on mystical Theology, she may be considered one of the greatest Doctors of the Church.  She died A.D. 1582.

Wednesday October 16th
St Hedwig, Widow.
St Hedwig, duchess of Poland, of royal stock and the maternal aunt of St Elizabeth of Hungary, retired into a Cistercian convent after the death of her husband.  She died A.D. 1243.

Thursday October 17th
St Margaret Mary Alacoque, Virgin.
St Margaret Mary Alocoque was born at Verosvres (France) in 1647 and entered the Order of the Visitation at Paray-le-Monial in 1671.  Jesus appeared to her in numerous visions, displaying to her His Sacred Heart, sometimes burning as a furnace, and sometimes torn and bleeding on account of the coldness and sins of men.  In 1675 the great revelation was made to her that she, in Union with Father de La Colombiere, SJ, was to be the chief instrument for instituting the Feast of the Sacred Heart and for spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart throughout the world.  She died on October 17th, A.D. 1690.

Friday October 18th
St Luke, Evangelist.
St Luke was probably born of pagan parents at Antioch.  Converted, he became the missionary companion of St Paul, who called him “the most dear physician” and “his fellow labourer”.  He preached the Gospel in Achaia, where he died at a ripe old age.  He earned undying glory by his writing of the Third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.

Saturday October 19th
St Peter of Alcantara, Confessor.
St Peter, a Spaniard of noble birth, entered the Order of St Francis at the age of 16.  He re-established the primitive Franciscan rule, and gave St Teresa powerful support in her work of reformation.  He died 1562.

Special Prayer Requests:
=> I urge you to pray daily that the sex-offenders in the church will be exposed and publicly named, shamed, and removed from office; before being handed over to the authorities.

=> I urge you to pray for the wellbeing of the animals around us.  Pray that both domestic and wild animals will be properly treated, respected and loved by all of us in the world.  The whole of the animal Kingdom, right down to the smallest and most insignificant animal is a creature of God, and deserves to be treated as such.

Homily:
Today’s talk is about perseverance, and about some of the tools that we have been given to help us to persevere.

Let’s jump right in, and look at the Full Armour of God, that has been given to us.  The armour of God is to protect us against rulers, and authorities, that constitute the powers of the dark world.  It is to protect us against the different levels of spiritual forces of evil that are in heavenly realms.  You see if you are a spiritual zero, in terms of trying to develop yourself spiritually or in terms of taking a stand against spiritual forces, then there is no need for the evil spiritual forces in high places to pay any attention to you.

As a spiritual zero you could safely say, that the spiritual side of life is of zero significance to you.  However as soon as you make a stand for God, you have exposed yourself, and sooner or later you will be a target of the power of the evil spiritual forces in high places.  These attacks can take many forms.  I have known people in perfect health, who have suddenly succumbed to illness that could have been understood in a weakened and sick body, but not in a healthy body.  I was witness to two healthy men who challenged certain spiritual structures and tried to make positive improvements.  Both of them got seriously ill within weeks of each other, and within months had died of medically explainable complications, but we know that they were seriously attacked by spiritual forces in high places.

When you take on the path of spiritual warfare, you are exposing yourself to attacks that will challenge both the integrity of your soul and your body, potentially destroying both, without mercy.  I am going to illustrate the quickest and easiest way to get involved in spiritual warfare, and leave you with a challenge to take it on, if you have not already.  You can become seriously involved in spiritual warfare, simply by making a decision to give your life to the Lord Jesus Christ, and to follow Jesus Christ from this point onwards in your life.  If you don’t take up the challenge if you have not already done so, it may be because you have already firmly established yourself on a route that will not lead to Union with God at the end of your lifetime.  This may be the reason why you have experienced no spiritual attacks in your life.  From the other side of the fence you are being offered love, not spiritual attacks, so you are able to walk away pretty much unaffected.
Take up this challenge now, and join us on the spiritual warfare front:
The Prayer of Redemption
Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for dying on the cross for my sins.
Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life.
I ask you into my life and heart to be my Lord and Saviour.
I undertake to get baptized as called for in the scriptures, Mark 16, verse 16.
Amen.

Mark, chapter 16, verse 16.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Acts, chapter 2, verse 38.
Peter Replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Now let’s take a closer look at the Armour of God.  The armour of God is fully capable of protecting you from the best attacks that can be launched against you, provided that you remain facing your opponent.  There is no protection provided for when you turn your back on your spiritual opponent, and walk away.  This is where Christians need to be, not much fun in being not worthy of attack.

Firstly you will have the belt of truth firmly buckled around your waist.  This is actually the most important part, because if you don’t have Truth fastened around your core your middle or your waist, then you probably would not need any of the other protection provided.  So the Truth needs to become part of your core-belief-system.  You belt will be an anchor point for the other pieces of armour that you will wear.

Next you need to put on the breastplate of righteousness.  This breastplate will provide you with protection from attacks which could potentially otherwise be fatal, to your soul or your body.  However take note that the breastplate is made of righteousness, or is composed of the essence of righteousness.  In other words you need to be righteous, in order for your breastplate to function.

Let me just make the concept of Righteousness a little clearer.  Righteousness or Rectitude is an important theological concept in Christianity, as we well as Judaism, Islam, Hinduism or Dharma, and Zoroastrianism.  It implies that a person’s actions are justified.  It means that the person is leading a life that is pleasing to God.  It implies that a person has given his life to the Lord Jesus Christ, and has been justified by faith.  The Hebrew word for righteousness is “tseh’-dek”, which means righteous, integrity, equity, justice, straightness.  The root of “tseh’-dek” is “tsaw-dak”, which means upright, just, straight, innocent, true, sincere.  Righteousness is best understood in terms of being the product of upright and moral action in accordance with the Will of God.

Ok, so you have the belt of truth, firmly buckled around your waist, and you have put on the breastplate of righteousness.  Notice that the breastplate does not protect your back in any way or form, so you dare not turn your back on your opponent, the evil spiritual forces in high places.

Now you are ready to have your feet fitted with the readiness from the Gospel of peace.  You see your feet never lie.  Your feet are always pointing in the direction that you really want to go.  If somebody is open to you, they will open your foot towards you, if they are not open to you, the foot will remain closed.  If somebody is nervous the toes will point inwards.  Now what are your feet telling us about you.  The only way to properly get the feet under control, is to study the Gospel of Peace, which is really just the Holy Scriptures or the Bible.  So you really need to understand the lessons in the Gospels intimately, so that you can apply them to situations in a genuine way.

Next we get the shield of Faith, which can be moved around to block the flaming arrows from the evil one, or the evil spiritual forces in high places.  Don’t be deceived, when you are under spiritual attack these fiery arrows will come, and they will do damage to your soul and or your body.  Notice that this excellent protection device the shield of faith is designed to protect the front of yourself, again no protection for your back, so you dare not turn your back, once you have engaged.  Notice also that the shield is made of Faith.  So you will need to have studied the scriptures, and have a firm unwavering belief or faith in the principles that are explained in the Gospels.  You need to believe 100%, in order for your shield to work 100%.  You need a 100% shield, you can’t afford to have a shield that allows 50% of the fiery arrows to penetrate.  So your faith has to be 100% complete.

Now you are ready for the next part of the armour of God, the “Helmet of salvation”.  The knowledge of your salvation is symbolically carried around in your mind or in your head, although it also resides in your heart and your soul.  You need to be certain at all times that your Salvation has been secured, because that is one of the foundation stones of all that you stand for as a Christian.  It is the reason why Christ Jesus came to this earth in the first place.  It is the reason why Christ Jesus died on the cross for our sins.  The helmet of Salvation protects this knowledge, because one of the tactics of evil spiritual forces in high places, is to just simply cast doubt as to the validity of your salvation.  Once that has been achieved, then everything else will start to fall apart, because everything is based on your personal Salvation, your atonement for sin, Justification by faith.  So the Helmet of Salvation protects you from intellectual attacks on your faith.  The Helmet of Salvation is the last of the purely protective parts of the Full Armour of God.

Now as a Christian you are clothed in:
- Belt of truth buckled around your middle.
- Breastplate of Righteousness.
- Feet fitted with readiness from the gospel of peace.
- Shield of Faith.
- Hemet of Salvation.
At this point in time you are in a position to withstand whatever the evil spiritual forces in high places decide to dish out to you.  However you are just cannon fodder, you have no way of fighting back.  So to complete the armour of God you will also need:

The “Sword of the Spirit”.
This sword is the spirit of God.  Whatever situation you are in, the spirit of God will shine through and do and say the appropriate things, so as to take the spiritual attackers out of action.  The Sword of the Spirit is a double edged sword.  This sword will cut your adversaries, on all the points that they don’t comply with the will of God.  However it will also cut the wielder of it with all the point that you don’t comply with the will of God.  So be careful, do proper preparation, before you just stand up and wield the “Sword of the Spirit”.  Also to ward off the attacks of evil spiritual forces in high places, you are going to have to use the “Sword of the Spirit”.

Once you are swinging the Sword of the Spirit around, and not bleeding because you are cutting yourself on it, you are ready for the next piece of the armour of God.  You need to “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions”.  You see Christians are instructed to get baptized with water and also with fire.  The day of Pentecost was when the Holy Spirit descended on all who were present, and baptized them with fire in the Holy Spirit.  Each of them started manifesting a gift of the spirit, such as speaking on other tongues.  By praying in the spirit, on all occasions, means that you are firstly addressing the attacks of the evil spiritual forces in ways that may be beyond your understanding.  Secondly you are developing your spiritual gifts that are giving to you by the Holy Spirit.  This can be done in different ways, you may be praying in other tongues for part of your prayer, or there may be an understanding that the spirit of God is upon you in some or other way.  When the spirit of God is upon you, or displayed within you, the evil spiritual forces in high places dare not take on the Holy Spirit directly.

Once you are praying in the spirit on all occasions you are ready for the big one.

Be alert, and keep on praying for all the Saints.  Yes this is the biggest one yet, because it is the final step that actually starts creating the Kingdom of god on Earth as the evil spiritual forces in high places sit and watch, powerless to do anything about it, because you have all the other pieces of the Armour of God in place.  You need to be alert, so that you can recognise the type of spiritual attack that is being mounted by the evil spiritual forces in high places, so that you can properly counter these attacks.  You need to keep on praying for all of the Saints because the church of Christ or the body of Christ is made up of all the individual Christians, working together.  In order to achieve a good healthy functioning whole, one needs to make sure that all the individual components are working properly.  So you are praying for all of the Saints to facilitate that as the body of Christ forms, it functions in the best possible way, with regards to its separate parts.

So now we are wearing the Full Armour of God, against which none of the Evil spiritual powers in high places has any power.  Of course you need to keep your armour in a state of good repair.  Your shield of Faith needs to be kept strong so that it can ward off all of the flaming arrows, that will be coming its way.  Your Sword of the Spirit will cut you where you don’t comply with the will of God.  Every part of the Armour of God needs to be in good condition, otherwise you will leave yourself exposed, to potentially fatal attack.  Also the armour of God has been designed in such a way, that once you engage with the evil spiritual forces in high places, there is no way that you can disengage or walk away, without suffering serious consequences.  You have to face your adversary, until the spiritual battle has been won.

- Belt of Truth buckled around your waist.
- Breastplate of Righteousness.
- Feet fitted with readiness from the gospel of peace.
- Shield of faith.
- Helmet of Salvation.
- Sword of the Spirit.
- Pray in the Spirit on all occasions.
- Be alert, and keep on praying for all the saints.

We find Jesus Christ sending out the twelve disciples with very special instructions, and of course to a large extent they were wearing a limited version of the Armour of God already.  They were given the power to drive out evil spirits, which to some intellectuals may equate to be able to remedy serious mental illness with a prayer.  They were given the power to heal every disease and sickness.  Just think for a moment about the power of this gift to the twelve disciples.  They could meet somebody who was dying from kidney or liver failure, or systemic heart failure, and just by laying their hands on them and praying, they would be healed.  For example those dying with HIV and AIDS, Cancers and etc, could all be healed.

Jesus Christ instructed them to do something that has largely been ignored by Christians from the earliest times, and right up to the present times.  Jesus said, “Go first to the lost sheep of Israel”.  Granted the lost sheep of Israel may not be the easiest group of people to convert to Christianity, but Jesus Christ has a very good reason for asking that of the disciples, and of us.

Jesus Christ told them that they were in effect being sent out as sheep amongst the wolves.  They were told to be a shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.  In their time of need the spirit of the Father would speak through them, so they did not have to be afraid to make appointments with absolutely any person or group of persons; because they would never be lost for words.

Jesus Christ explained how all sorts of people would come to hate them, because of what they stood for.  However they were instructed to not be afraid of powerful men, or men who could destroy the physical body.  They should rather have more fear of the evil one who could destroy both the soul and the body.

Jesus Christ explained that whoever acknowledges him before men, he will acknowledge them before his Father in heaven.

There was a whole lot of advice that was given to the twelve before they set off.  Perhaps a lot of it, like the details on how to heal anybody was not added into the Gospel.  Imagine attending a Master class with Jesus Christ, on how to heal anybody from any disease or illness.  What would that have been worth to you?  Well the twelve disciples attended just such a Master class, which included the transference of whatever spiritual powers were needed to achieve the healing.  Would you like to gain the knowledge on healing any disease with a prayer?

Although the details of the Master healing class were not included in the Gospels as such, there were some details given, as far as anecdotal information around each specific healing incidence was concerned.  In different books of the bible, little bits and pieces of the healing process were revealed.  If one were to put them all together, you would get a bigger picture of how the heaoing worked.  However probably still not enough.  However if you looked further into various works from various authors over the last two thousand years, you would be able to crystalize the combined knowledge into a much more comprehensive account of how spiritual healing works.  Yet there would still be something missing.  You would still not have the complete picture.

These days there are some evangelists who have the gift of healing.  People come to their healing meetings and leave healed of their illnesses.  People like this have probably found some of the missing pieces to the puzzle, but again, one does not find books published by these healing giants, explaining how to do the healing.  There may be anecdotal details, but about the mechanism, and how it really works, not much.

However the secret to spiritual healing has been documented and explained, but perhaps not in the way that we would like to see it documented and explained.  In the details of the Full Armour of God, we see that one of the instructions is to Pray in the Spirit on all occasions.  Now if it pleases God to give you the gift of healing, you will be given whatever you need on a Spiritual level in order to be able to perform the healing.  So it is not a manual that everybody can study, and become a healer, it is reserved for those who have followed the Will of God by praying in the spirit on all occasions, and whom God has chosen for reasons that we don’t understand, to give the gift of healing to.  To others who align themselves to the Will of God, God has given them other fruits or gifts of the spirit.  I am sure that the most appropriate and valuable gifts are given to each individual, according to their needs, on an eternal level.  So it is not about a moment of gratification on this earthly plain, but more of a very long-term strategy, determined by the Will of God, and what you as a Soul are ready to take on, in this moment in time.

Church History – Article 16:
Awakening
The Great Awakening was not just another revival, but a spiritual revival of major proportions.  In America the Revival had its beginnings in New England, and Jonathan Edwards (1703 - 1758), played a major role.  George Whitefield an associate of John Wesley visited America in the late 1730’s.  “Revivalism” had always been the essence of American Christianity, all the way from the first plantation, and all the way up to Billy Graham.  A steady rhythm of revivals followed the lean years in America.

The Great Awakening followed the pattern of previous revivals.  Coldness and corruption in the orthodox churches provoked many Christians into a desire for greater spiritual warmth and reality.  Eventually the spark of concern broke forth into the flame of revival.  After the initial awakening in New England under the leadership of Jonathan Edwards, the revival swept up and down the Atlantic seaboard.  Every denomination was affected by the revival.

Every part of British North America reaped its benefits in terms of converts, and renewed religious life.  With this came increased spiritual and social sensitivity.  Every major Christian group had an internal battle with those who supported the preaching of the great Awakening, and those who opposed it.  Ultimately the pro-revivalists won.  Revivalism has continued to be a major part of the American Christian life up to the present day.

The Great Awakening also came at the time of the American Revolution of 1776.  The Protestant denominations in the colonies, all supported the American Revolution.  Baptists, Congregationalists, Presbyterians, Reformed and Lutherans, joined the American Revolution in Great numbers.  The Anglicans on the other hand did not support the cause of the American Revolution, to the same extent.  The Anglicans were hampered by the authority structure of the church and conflicting loyalties within the church.  Most of the religious enthusiasm generated by the great awakening was channelled into the revolution.  Expectations for the coming Kingdom of God on Earth were exchanged for the ideal of a Nation that would emphasize both evangelical Christian values and republican principles.

What really excited many Christians during the American revolution was the New Constitution of the United Sates, which incorporated the notion of the separation of Church and State in its Bill of Rights.  Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826), had worked with the growing numbers of Baptists and evangelical dissenters in the new nation to get this into the Bill of Rights.

In France, the great revolution of 1789, had a markedly different effect to the American revolution.  The was a strong reaction against organized religion and the constitutional Church.  The revolutionaries built upon the ideas of the Enlightenment, and regarded the Church as being part of the old regime, which needed to be overthrown, and banished from French life, once and for all.  The French Catholic hierarchy supported the monarchy.  However perhaps the saving grace for the Catholic church in France was that the parish priests tended to be sympathetic with the cause of the revolutionaries, especially in the early days.

The French Revolution severely and permanently damaged the status of the Roman Catholic Church in France.  It became almost impossible during the revolution to be both a republican and a catholic.  Eventually in the next century the nineteenth century, a bitter struggle between the state and the church developed, especially over such matters as education.  Eventually a series of laws were passed which severely restricted the powers of the Catholic Church in France, which still remain.

(Next week we look at “an age of reason”)

An Anglican Catechism  – Article 16:
The Sacraments (Baptism)
=> What are the sacraments?
The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive that grace.

=> What is grace?
Grace is God’s favour towards us, unearned and undeserved; by grace God forgives our sins, enlightens our minds, stirs our hearts, and strengthens our wills.

=> What are the tow great sacraments of the gospel?
The two great sacraments given by Christ to his Church are Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.

Baptism
=> What is Baptism?
Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children and makes us members of Christ’s Body, the Church, and inheritors of the Kingdom of God.

=> What is the outward and visible sign in baptism?
The outward and visible sign in baptism is water, in which the person is baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

=> What is the inward and spiritual grace in baptism?
The inward and spiritual grace in baptism is union with Christ in his death and resurrection, birth into God’s family the Church, forgiveness of sins, and new life in the Holy Spirit.

=> What is required of us in baptism?
It is required that we renounce Satan, repent of our sins, and accept Jesus as our Lord and saviour.

=> Why then are infants baptized?
Infants are baptized so that they can share citizenship in the Covenant, membership in Christ, and redemption by God.

=> How are the promises for infants made and carried out?
Promises are made for them by their parents and sponsors, who guarantee that the infants will be brought up within the Church, to know Christ and be able to follow him.

(Next week we will look at The Holy Eucharist)

Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name:  Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation.  But deliver us from evil.
[Protestants can optionally add:  For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.]
Amen.

A Meditation for all Humanity, The Great Invocation:
This meditation or prayer refers to the Kingdom of God, establishing itself on Earth.
(In place of the word “Christ” below, you may be more comfortable with the term “Lord Maitreya”, “the Imam Mahdi”, “the Bodhisattva”, “the Messiah”, or etc.)

From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let Light stream forth into the minds of men.
Let Light descend on Earth.

From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let Love stream forth into the hearts of men.
May Christ return to Earth.

From the centre where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide the little wills of men
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.

From the centre which we call the race of men
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.

Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.

By using the Invocation and encouraging others to use it, no particular group or organisation is sponsored. It belongs to all humanity.

Benedictio:
Amen.  (The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son, Christ our Lord; and the Blessing of God Almighty, the Father, + the Son and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always.  Amen. )
