Homily / Sermon:
Firstly I talk about water, wine, and faith.
Next I talk about appreciating wine.
Lastly I will discuss the gift of eternal life, that Jesus Christ came to give everybody on earth.

Water, Wine, and Faith
In the Gospel we read about the first miracle of Jesus Christ, where he turned water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana.  Water is so important to us, because most of our bodies are made up of water.  Blood which is symbolic of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ would make after a few short years of teaching; is also made up mostly of water, as is wine which is symbolic of the blood that Jesus Christ shed for us, made up mainly of water.

There is still an ongoing discussion as to whether the wine made had an alcoholic content, or was grape juice.  These are one of those mysteries that we have been left with to unravel for ourselves.  Certainly in the more traditional Christian churches, you will find that alcoholic wine offered during the communion service, whereas other groups would use grape juice or non-alcoholic wine.  The important point to recognise is that Jesus Christ changed ordinary water into something really special, into a high quality wine.  Fermenting the grape juice and creating a product with an alcoholic content is a technique that has been practiced for thousands of years.  Alcoholic wine is neither good nor bad; but simply a high quality product that needs to be appreciated responsibly.

In actual fact the amount of alcohol consumed by the average person taking communion is far less than the amount of alcohol that would be present in a teaspoon of cough mixture or other medicinal product.  The only reason why some groups would go to all the trouble to use unfermented wine or grape juice as their wine, when celebrating Holy communion, is to take into account the effect that the alcohol could have on the alcoholics in their group.  Think of it this way, a small wafer is dipped into a chalice holding some wine, and then placed into the mouth of the recipient.  The actual amount of wine is miniscule.  If the Priest is by himself, he would just administer the wafers or bread, and so no wine at all would be given to the recipients of Holy communion.

You are probably asking, “but how do you put water, wine, and faith, in the same category.”  The answer is easy, you see water makes up most of our physical being, and is essential to our survival.  Wine which is also made up primarily of water, has a strong spiritual aspect, especially when used in the context of Holy communion.  Celebrating Jesus Christ, and our eternal salvation, using the bread and wine, is an essential part of our belief system as Christians.  Faith is something that is based on our belief system, our spiritual beliefs, which has its foundations in the wine as used in the Holy communion.  Faith is an essential quality that is the glue which makes things work on a spiritual level.

For example at that very feast of Cana, there was a certain Nobleman, who had come to see Jesus Christ, because his son was at the point of death back in Capernaum.  In fact his son was running a life threatening temperature or high fever, which did not or could not break.  If the fever did not break it would lead to death, and it seemed that this Nobleman’s son had already passed the point, where he could recover.  It seemed that he would die at any moment.

This Nobleman besought Jesus Christ to travel with him to Capernaum to heal his son.  He believed that if Jesus Christ went with him to his son, then his son would live.  This Nobleman already had faith in Jesus Christ, faith in God.

In the context that Jesus Christ was and is God, he could have done anything at anytime.  However Jesus decided to test this nobleman before changing the circumstances that his son was in.  So Jesus says to the nobleman, tongue in cheek I suppose; “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.”  The nobleman is completely focussed on what needs to happen for his son to live, and he argues with Jesus, that if he were to just return to Capernaum with him, then his son would live.

Jesus Christ says to this nobleman, “Go thy way; thy son liveth.”  The nobleman had complete faith that his son was going to live, he had complete faith in the words that Jesus Christ had spoken to him.  The nobleman starts his journey back to Capernaum, which would take a few days, because remember in those days they were travelling from place to place on foot.  As he walked he realized just how completely he had faith in the words of Jesus Christ, he knew his son would live.

On the second day of his journey back to his son in Capernaum, the nobleman comes across his servants who have come to give him news of his son.  His servants tell him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”  His son has been healed, his son will live.  The nobleman realises that at that moment of the previous day, when Jesus Christ had told him that his son would live, and at the same time he had believed Jesus Christ with all his heart his son had been healed in that moment of faith.  It all came down to a single moment in time, a moment of pure faith.

You see when you cut through all the details and get down to what really counts, you find that very often it is just a moment when you have focussed completely on believing the promises of Jesus Christ, and have created that small seed of faith, that things suddenly happen in a divine way.  Jesus Christ also told us that if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we could move mountains.  That nobleman had a moment of complete faith, he had his mustard seed of faith, but he did not choose to move a mountain, he caused his son to be healed with his faith, which is equally inspiring.  Below you will find the prayer of redemption, and if you have complete faith in the process, you will in that moment have obtained eternal life for yourself.

Appreciating Wine
Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians, mentions that they should walk in circumspection, as wise people, and not to walk as fools.  You see if we don’t think about what we are doing, then it is easy to do something that will make out actions look like the actions of a fool.  If you are walking through life without thinking about where you are going, then don’t be surprised if you walk straight through the crossroads like a fool, without having chosen this way or that, but simply following where your mindless footsteps have fallen.

You see we need to think about what the will of God is, about how Gods will applies to our specific lives.  We need to spend periods of time in prayer, meditation and contemplation, trying to understand, even if it is just a very little bit, the will of God in our lives.  Once we have some understanding of God’s will, we can walk through life, being relatively wiser than those around us.

Having achieved a small understanding of the will of God, however small it is, we will be in a position to start looking at various questions and begin to explain or understand them better.  Let’s take the art of appreciating wine for example.  Now because wine has an alcoholic aspect to it, there are many aspects to it that can trip us up.  We would probably have understood that the important thing is to avoid excess, with regards to wine.  In wisdom at a wine tasting occasion, we would taste the dry wines first for example, so that we don’t overpower our palate with the sweet varieties.  We would be following the practice of spitting the wine out, after we have tasted it, so that we don’t drink the wine to excess.  We would have taken the necessary actions so that we would not under any circumstances have become drunk on wine, because then we are no longer walking in wisdom.  If we are having wine with our meal, then limiting it to one glass is wise.  Drinking a second and third glass or more would indicate that we had allowed our self to slip into a situation of excess, which would negatively affect our efforts to walk in wisdom.  We would in fact be walking through life as a fool, providing an opportunity for laughter, because of our mindless actions.

In these short verses Saint Paul does give some advice on focussing our minds on certain things in order to create a better end result.  Remember that the end result is not for others to see, but for God to see in the book of life, when we stand before him, on the day of judgement.  Saint Paul had recommended filling our thoughts with the words of the psalms in song, hymns and other spiritual songs.  Paul recommends that we create a melody in our hearts dedicated to God through Jesus Christ.  If we focus on God in complete faith, then we can use that mustard seed of faith in a wise way to improve the general situation of humankind, or specific people who are close to us.

Saint Paul gives us even more advice, and that is to be grateful for all things, and to give thanks for them to God through Jesus Christ.  This is incredibly powerful advice.  You see when you don’t have much, but you are grateful for that little bit that you do have, then you will be given more.  However if you are not grateful, then you may find, that even that little bit that you do have, will be taken away from you.  Paul had specifically said that we should give thanks to God through Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ said that no man comes to the father except through him.  You see Jesus Christ set up a spiritual law.  Once a spiritual law is in place, it makes no sense to fight against it, if you want results you need to take the spiritual law into account.

Jesus Christ or God the son, was sent to earth by God or God the Father, to provide the entire earth with a way to get eternal life.  The spiritual law is that because Jesus Christ came to give us this law, we must action it through him.  So to get to the father or to God we need to go through Jesus Christ.  This spiritual law holds true for giving thanks unto God, we use the same route.  We give thanks unto God through Jesus Christ.  It may seem like a complication, but it is a necessary spiritual law.  If we don’t follow this law, it may be that nothing seems to work, you may say that your God does not hear you, for example.  As soon as you start following this law, then things will start going much better.  Remember walk as the wise, and take the spiritual laws into account.  To walk as the fool without any wisdom or acknowledgement of these laws; will result in frustration.

Eternal Life for Everybody
Everybody on Earth needs to believe in Jesus Christ, and receive the opportunity to receive eternal life.  If you take this seriously, then you should pray the prayer of Redemption if you have not already done so, so that you can receive eternal life for yourself.  Once you have secured eternal life for yourself, then you need to share the good news and the prayer of redemption with others, so that more and more people may receive eternal life.  See the Prayer of Redemption below.

Homily / Sermon:
Firstly I will explain the concept of “Many are called, but few are chosen.”
Lastly I will discuss the renewal of the mind of those that are chosen.

Many are called but few are chosen
You have probably heard this a few times already, “many are called but few are chosen.”  The thing is what does this really mean?  As we get to the end of this explanation, you will see that there are things that you can do, to make sure that you are chosen in the end.  You will also understand that if you do nothing about the situation, you may be part of the majority that are called but not chosen.  So often we hear about people who receive a calling, to become a Pastor or a Priest or a Healer or a Disciple or Believer.  Sometimes they take up the calling and sometimes not.  However after having taken up the calling, how can you make sure that you are chosen?  I am going to tell you exactly how, at the end of this first part.

Now as was often the case, Jesus Christ was talking to a large crowd of people, and had chosen to speak to them in the form of a parable.  The idea of the parable was to enable the ordinary person to understand the teaching in simple terms.  However for those who were spiritually advanced students of Jesus Christ, there were additional meanings and teachings within the parable, that were not obvious, until it had been explained.  Typically Jesus Christ would explain the deeper meaning of the parables to his disciples when they were alone.

Now Jesus Christ was explaining to the crowd the nature of the Kingdom of Heaven.  This topic in itself immediately poses questions as to whether it is a spiritual Kingdom, or the Kingdom that will establish itself on earth after the return of Jesus Christ, or maybe something beyond our comprehension, that embodies aspects of all of the possibilities.

Jesus Christ begins, by explaining that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a King who is making the arrangements for the marriage of his son.  The King had prepared everything for the feast or banquet to be held after the marriage ceremony.  There was already a list of guests who had been chosen to attend this wedding feast.  So the King sent out his servants to gather the guests for the feast.  However something strange happened, the guests would not come to the feast.  You see these people had been chosen to attend the marriage feast, they had a calling; but they chose not to take it up.

Upon hearing this news, the King decided to explain the circumstances of the marriage feast to the chosen people a little more explicitly.  He instructs the servants to tell the people that a meal has been prepared.  The servants were to explain that the oxen and fattened up animals had already been killed for the feast.  Everything was ready, the King was just waiting for the chosen (called) people to come to the feast.

Again a remarkable thing happens, those chosen do not take it seriously, and they make light of the invitation, some may have even made jokes about the invitation from the King.  They go about their business as though nothing had happened.  Some go to their farms, and others to their place of business or place of work.  This is so much like people in society today, who have heard the good news of Jesus Christ, but choose to do nothing about it.

However this was not the end of it, there was even a group of those that were chosen to attend the feast, who took the Kings servants in custody, and treated them in a spiteful and disrespectful way, ending up by murdering the Kings servants.  This is so much like our society today, where you find those groups of people who have heard the good news of Jesus Christ, but have decided to actively work against God, instead of accepting the message.  What happens to these people further on in the parable; is symbolic of how they will fair in the afterlife.

When the King received the news of how his servants had been received, and how some of them had been disrespected and murdered, he was very upset.  The King sent his armies to destroy those murderers and to burn their city.  The King explained to his servants that the wedding is ready, but those chosen to attend the wedding were not ready.  To understand this parable, you need to picture yourself as a pilgrim moving through the various scenarios described in the parable.

Now the King does something quite remarkable.  He instructs his servants to go to the highways, and other places where people were to be found.  The servants were to invite all those that they could find, regardless of who they were to the wedding.  This also symbolizes that Jesus Christ came first for the Jews, and then also for the Gentiles.  The great commission is to go into all the world, and to give everybody the opportunity of receiving eternal life, regardless of who they are.  Some of these guests were very good people, but others were bad people.  All of these people, symbolic of the Gentiles or non-Jews had been called.  In the same way at the beginning of the parable the Jews had been called.  Of course speaking of the Jews and the Gentiles is a way of dividing the world into two groups, one the Jews, and secondly, everybody else.  So you see this is how we understand that many are called.  In fact everybody had been called to the wedding.  However in reality it is not absolutely everybody, because of circumstances there would have been those people who had not received an invitation.

You may have been wondering why it was specifically a wedding feast, and not just an ordinary feast.  Well in the scriptures the bride of Jesus Christ is also depicted as the church or that group of people who believe in Jesus Christ and are his followers.  So this makes it very specific.  The Kings son is none other than Jesus Christ himself, and the King is God the Father.

So now we have all these called or chosen people (Gentiles) to attend the wedding, making up the guests for the wedding.  These were the people who had taken up the calling, the rest were not present amongst the guests.  Now the King comes to have a look at his guests, and he notices a man who is not wearing his wedding garment.  The wedding garment symbolizes atonement for Sin, or justification by faith, it symbolizes that the person has received the gift of eternal life from Jesus Christ.  So the King sees this one man amongst his guests who has not taken that step.  What happens next symbolizes what will happen if you are not chosen.

The King instructs his servants, and by the way the servants represent the Angels of God, to bind this man hand and foot, and to cast him into the outer darkness, where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  You see if you are chosen, then you can’t pass through the pearly gates into the Kingdom of Heaven.  You will have to remain outside of these gates, where you will be separated from God, in what is described in this parable as the outer darkness.

So now if you look at yourself, you have probably heard the good news of Jesus Christ, because almost everybody on earth these days has heard about Jesus Christ.  You have either accepted your salvation or you have not.  You may have joined a group of people who believe in Jesus Christ, but in order to be chosen, you have to take the big step, if you have not already done so, and accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour.  See the prayer of redemption below, and consider downloading the free ebook below, to study it in more detail.  So I could probably safely say that you have been called to eternal life, but will you take the step to ensure that you will be chosen?

Renewal of the mind
In the book of Ephesians, Paul is giving us teachings from his place in prison.  You see Paul had been put into prison by the Romans because he professed Jesus Christ.  Quite a few years later the Romans would make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire, after exacting horrendous persecutions on the early christians.

Paul is speaking about the renewal of the mind, and he says that we must be renewed in the spirit of the mind.  To me this symbolizes that our core belief system must be renewed, so that whatever comes out of the mind, or the tongue spurts forth; is controlled by the core belief system, or your inner self.  In other words we need to truly renew our minds on a very deep and spiritual level, and not just pay lip service to the concept.  If we just pay lip service, sooner or later our true feelings and beliefs will be expressed, which will reveal that our minds have not been renewed.  Once we have prayed the prayer of redemption, and been baptised with water and with fire, then we need to make sure that our minds are renewed.

Paul goes on to give some practical advice of how we can make sure that our minds are renewed.
We are to put on the new man.  Remember that after the prayer of redemption you are born again.  This means that although your physical body is still the same, there has been a fundamental change in your spiritual being, because you have accepted eternal life with God.  Now to put on the new man, or woman for that matter, is to allow that inner spiritual change to permeate to your outer physical being and change the way you see things, the way you respond to things.  You see this new man is created in the likeness of God, and so it is created in righteousness and true holiness, because God is righteous and truly Holy.  The mind is that part of ourselves, our mental bodies, that control our speech, our outlook and so on.  So it is good to think of this process as the renewing of the mind.

Now once you have allowed your mind to be renewed, after the prayer of redemption, then there are a few things that you should look to because they should have changed.  For example, you should no longer be telling lies, but speaking only the truth with those around you, and especially with your neighbour.  In Jesus Christ we are members of the body of believers, so if we lie, it is like lying to ourselves.  We are brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, and so we should speak the truth to our brothers and sisters.  If you get angry about an injustice that has taken place, you still should not allow yourself to sin because of it, because your mind is renewed.  Also and this is about emotional intelligence, don’t allow the sun to set on your anger, but make peace in your heart.  Don’t let yourself be influenced by negative and retaliatory emotions.

For those who were once thieves, because of your renewed mind, you should steal no more.  Instead you should devout yourself to honest labour.  It is good to work with your hands or your intellect; to create those things which are good and positive.  By doing this you will be in a position to give to those who are in need of charity.

Everybody on Earth needs to believe in Jesus Christ, and learn the ways of God that Jesus Christ taught us.  In this way we will be ready for the second coming of Jesus Christ.  In fact Jesus Christ may be patiently waiting for all of us to finally come to this realization.

If you take this seriously, then you should pray the prayer of Redemption if you have not already done so, so that you can start to receive all of the gifts of the spirit, and position yourself for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and contribute towards the goal of world peace.  See the Prayer of Redemption below.

Homily / Sermon:
Firstly I will discuss “Thy sins be forgiven thee.”
Secondly ”In all things you are enriched by Jesus Christ.”

Thy sins be forgiven thee
Jesus Christ was busy with his three years ministry, after preparing for eighteen years, after he had reached the age of twelve years old.  In the Jewish tradition he had become a man at the age of twelve.  The Holy bible tells us almost nothing about these eighteen years of preparation, but the New Testament focuses on the three years of ministry which ended in the Cruxifixion.  It was during this three year period, that the disciples brought a man to Jesus, who was sick with Palsy.  He was so sick that he had become bed-ridden.

Jesus Christ looked at the sick man with compassion, and after some consideration said to him: “Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee.”  We as outsiders looking on, would immediately ask: why did Jesus forgive his sins, instead of curing him of his illness.

It is not always easy to understand that in the bigger picture, it may have been more important for this man to have his sins forgiven, then to have his physical condition cured.  You see we are looking on at this scene with physical eyes, and are looking for and expecting physical things to happen.  When we see something physical happening, then we will be satisfied that something has happened, because we are physical beings.

God on the other hand is spirit, and even although God had manifested in the form of the physical body of Jesus Christ, God still remains spirit.  From a spiritual perspective the most pressing or important task was to forgive this man’s sins, the illness that this man was afflicted with was of a secondary concern to Jesus Christ.

There were some very important and respected people present there that day, a group of scribes.  With our modern communications technology it may be difficult to appreciate the important and respected role that the scribes played in society.  Scribes were considered to be learned people.  Now these scribes, these learned and respected people were thinking about what Jesus had just done.  They were even thinking that maybe Jesus Christ had committed a blasphemy.

Now we see that Jesus Christ was aware of their thoughts, he knew that they needed to see the physical side of a miracle in order to be able to take it seriously.  Although Jesus Christ had already done something absolutely amazing for this sick man, he was also going to heal him physically.  To fully understand the depth and significance of what Jesus Christ had done for this man, you can download the free ebook “Atonement for Everyone by Father Mac Kruisium.  Look under the News heading, above the sermon.

Jesus addresses the scribes:  Jesus asks them if it is easier to say “Thy sins be forgiven thee, or, Arise and Walk?”  Can you answer this question, which is easier to say and why?  Jesus continues talking to the scribes:  “In order that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins.”

Jesus turns to the palsied man and says, “Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.”  To the amazement of everybody, the palsied man who was bed-ridden rises, he rolls his bed up, throws it over his shoulder, and starts walking to his House.

The Scribes, and the crowds are amazed, at this marvel that Jesus Christ had performed.  They begin to glorify God for this tremendous power that has been given to ordinary people to heal others in the name of Jesus Christ.  They were still contemplating the relative advantages of forgiving sins, as compared to physically healing a sick person.  I am sure that if you had to be honest, you would have to admit that the physical healing of somebody is far easier to appreciate than the hidden benefits of forgiving the sins of another.

In all things you are enriched by Jesus Christ
Paul explains how he thanks God on behalf of the disciples for the Grace that has been given to them by Jesus Christ.  To think that such encouraging words would be coming from Paul while he was in that ancient jail.  It is really as though he was able to see and understand beyond the physical circumstances that he was forced to live in.  Paul was the type of person that would be saying, “Thank you Jesus, that I can be in jail for your sake, thank you for this opportunity.”  In those days the blood of the martyrs was like seed for more and more Christians or followers of Jesus Christ.

The Romans certainly did their best to stamp Christianity out in those early days.  Countless men, woman and children were slaughtered like animals, because they proclaimed the name of Jesus Christ.  Probably similar in some ways to the type of atrocities that are being carried out in some countries at the top of Africa currently.  I read one report where people were running through the streets and murdering in horrible ways every child, woman and man who were supposed to be Christians.  Worse than this, they were doing this in the name of God.  These murderers had mistakenly believed that God wanted them to do this.  The interesting thing is that the Christians that were being murdered in the name of God were also followers of God, because there is only one God.  Not every group of people have their own God, there is only one God, and we all have to share God with each other.

Now I ask you this: What must God think of all of this?  One group says that God has told them or requires them to mercilessly murder and abuse people in the streets to the extent that the blood is running down the streets, and the scene looks like “Hell on Earth”.  The other group refuse to give up their belief in God.  They are prepared to die because of their belief in God.

I don’t know what God thinks about the atrocities that we commit against each other in the name of God.  I do know that even the most uninformed outsider will seriously doubt that the people doing the murdering are connected to God in any way.  They will probably think that they are hiding behind the concept of God, in order that they can walk down the street murdering people.

The uninformed onlooker will find himself or herself doubting that such religion has any merit in it at all, although others of the same religion will point out that their religion is all about love?

Personally I believe that God is disgusted with all of us.  We all need to take responsibility for what has happened in the past, and for what is busy happening right now.  We can’t just sit back and say, “you know what, I don’t belong to that particular group, but rather I belong to this group.”

There are some positive things that we can do.
·         We can adopt an attitude of zero tolerance to crimes against humanity in the name of religion, regardless of which religion.
·         We can adopt a position of neutrality, being an impartial arbitrator for both sides of the conflict, and being part of the solution, rather than adding to the problem.
·         We can strive for World Peace.  One of the first requirements for world peace is that no group of people regardless of who they are should ever again be allowed to commit atrocities against another group of people.  No reasons will ever be sufficient to justify this, and therefore such action should be stopped at whatever cost, so that we can enjoy peace.
·         We can start speaking to people about the possibility of choosing Peace rather than contributing to or supporting groups that practice atrocities against humanity in the name of God.  We can aggressively petition for Peace.  Peace is the result of serious action, and not the result of overlooking atrocities and doing nothing about it.  If your brother has murdered woman and children in the name of God, then it is your duty to let him know that you do not approve on any level, in any way.
·         We can take responsibility for the actions of our brothers and sisters, regardless of the atrocities that they may have committed.  We must step forth and offer healing and peace, and humble ourselves on behalf of the atrocities of our brothers and sisters.  By taking responsibility we will be making sacrifices on their behalf to restore Peace on Earth.

Regardless of your faith, regardless of your background, regardless of who you are: the fact remains that there is and always will be only one God.  There is only one Jesus Christ, who came to Earth to offer salvation for every person with no restrictions at all.  The petty conflicts between various faith groups and religions, should not be tolerated any more in any way, or on any level.

Jesus Christ enriches us all in many different ways, in fact in all things we are enriched by Jesus Christ.  It does not matter about our belief system or who we are.  Jesus Christ is for everybody on Earth.  Jesus Christ enriches you in all the things that you say, in all the things that you do, and in all the knowledge that you acquire, and in everything that you work with.

The work of Jesus Christ was continued by his disciples, who did their best to fulfil the commission to take the good news of Jesus Christ to “all the world.”  The early church or organization that was formed from the followers of Jesus Christ had the possibility of being the organization for everybody on Earth.  Such a church or organization would have accommodated absolutely everybody, and they would have all been united by the fact that they believed in Jesus Christ.  You see after Jesus Christ came to earth there was no longer any need for all the different religions of the world.  Jesus Christ is God himself, or as we know him as the Son of God, but he remains and always will be the second aspect of the one and only God.  Sadly the early church became in time, the Catholic Church, and did not replace all the religions of the world.  I believe that the world was not ready for that at the time.  Is it ready now, what do you think?

Everybody on Earth needs to believe in Jesus Christ, and learn the ways of God that Jesus Christ taught us.  In this way we will be ready for the second coming of Jesus Christ.  In fact Jesus Christ may be patiently waiting for us all to finally come to this realization.

Firstly I will discuss the “New Commandment” that Jesus Christ brought to us.
Secondly I will discuss the ignored, but true meaning of the Catholic Church.

New Commandment
The Pharisees were in a group talking about Jesus Christ, and trying to find ways to test him out of the scriptures.  One of them who was a lawyer, and had a very clever line came forward and asked Jesus this question:
“Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”

Now you must understand that Jesus had been talking about things that did not seem to make sense to the Pharisees.  They were trying in their way to make it understandable, but at the same time, they were trying very hard to discredit Jesus Christ.  So when this lawyer approached Jesus Christ with his specific question, the Pharisees it seems were hoping that this would be the leading question to discrediting Jesus Christ.  However the answer that Jesus Christ gave, was not what they were expecting, in fact I don’t think that anybody there saw it coming.  It was almost as though Jesus Christ was waiting for this lawyer to approach him, so that he could give the teaching of the New Commandment.

Jesus Answered: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul , and with all thy mind.” This is the first and great commandment.
Jesus goes on to say: “And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
But Jesus is not finished yet, he goes on to say: “On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

In this teaching Jesus Christ had told the Pharisees, his disciples, and all that were present there that day, that the great commandment was to love the Lord your God with all your heart, and secondly to love your neighbour as yourself.  Before the lawyer who was with the Pharisees could make any comments on this amazing revelation, Jesus goes on to explain something that is as profound today as it was then.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

That last statement is perhaps one of the most far reaching and profound statements that have ever been made.  In a nutshell what it means is that if you love God and your Neighbour, then you automatically fulfil all of the laws and stipulations in the books of the law, and also any thing that was mentioned by any of the prophets.  Now things had become so easy and yet so hard for us.  So easy, because instead of trying to comply with an impossible array of rules and regulations, all you had to do was to love God and you fellow person as yourself.  So hard, because it was difficult to accept that all you had to do was love.  This statement was so amazing, because now anybody could achieve the difficult task of re-uniting with God.  You no longer needed to be a Pharisee, and to live a life of complying to thousands of difficult to remember laws.  Now you just had two, or as is sometimes pointed out one Law, which is to love God and your neighbour.

You will notice that Jesus Christ refers to the three aspects of a person, your heart, soul and mind.

So now you have these Pharisees, who had spent a lifetime studying and living the laws of the scriptures.  After the words of Jesus Christ, they did not have any comments of offer, even the lawyer could not think of anything to say after the words of Jesus.

In a way you can say Jesus is having some fun with the Pharisees, because they were still hanging around, hoping that something would come up, that they could use to discredit Jesus Christ with.  So after a while Jesus asks the Pharisees:
“What think ye of Christ?  Whose son is he?”

To put that in perspective, “Christ” had been spoken of throughout the books of the law and the books of the prophets.  The Pharisees were experts on the “Christ”.  They could tell you anything about the Christ, except the most important thing which was that “Jesus was and is the Christ”.  You see they had no idea that Jesus was the Christ, as his disciples likewise had no idea at the time.  You see this information had not yet been shared by God, the time was not right yet.  The Pharisees thinking that this was an easy question answered:  “The Son of David”.

Jesus Christ in turn asks them this question: “How then does David in spirit call him Lord saying,
The Lord said unto my Lord, sit though on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
“If David then call him Lord, how is he his Son?”

No man was able to answer this question.  Of course we have the advantage of 2000 years of hindsight, and so can pass some comments.  It could be that the Pharisees were looking at the question from a purely physical perspective, rather than a spiritual one, and so could not formulate anything that made physical sense.  For us it is enough to know that God is spirit, and is not limited to three dimensional space and linear time.  You see Jesus was referring to God who sits on his throne in Heaven, and at his right hand is the word, or Jesus Christ his son.  On the day of judgement, once everyone has been divided into those who are to unite with God and those who are not to unite with God.  Those who do not unite with God on that symbolic day will find themselves revealed as the enemies of God, and find themselves under the feet of Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ is the morning and the evening star, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.  There is no way that you can explain such a spiritual existence of God in physical terms.  Even the most learned of Pharisees had to depart that day, without having made any comments on this final statement of Jesus Christ.

However the most important point that the Pharisees went home with that day was the lesson of the New Commandment.  They had been taught, as the disciples and everyone else that day had been taught, that all of their learning of the scriptures, and exercises to follow every stipulation of the law was meaningless, because the great commandment was simply to Love the Lord Your God.

The true meaning of the Catholic Church
Now you may be wondering why I would refer to the true meaning of the Catholic Church.  I speak of this because the word Catholic means universal.

In the Epistle we are asked to look to and look after each other in love.  We are to do this in lowliness and meekness.  You see to stand up in front of the assemblies and to tell the others that you have helped a certain person, but giving them certain necessities such as food and drink, and shelter and clothing etc is not the correct way to go.  If we do that then we have already received our reward for the good deed, and have not built our treasures up in heaven.  So we find that we need to help people without letting our ego’s get in the way.  We need to help people, because they are our neighbours, and we are loving them as we love ourselves, as in the second part of the new commandment.  As those who are being helped, will not feel good, when the news of the help that they have received is freely given out to everybody.  So we should not do this to them, because we love them as ourselves.  Therefore we should exercise our charity with lowliness and meekness.

Yes but what has that to do with “Catholic” you may ask.  We get the concept of universal or Catholic from the fact that our neighbour whom we love as ourselves, could be anybody from any walk of life, from any background, of any race, of any country or political or religious persuasion.  So if our neighbour is universal, then this is the first step towards understanding the true meaning of Catholic.

“Endeavouring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.”  You see God is spirit, and we are to keep the unity of the spirit, because there is just one God.  Peace is one of the most difficult things to achieve, but once you start on the path, you will notice the results immediately.  Sometimes a smile can start things going in a positive direction, a hug or a warm handshake, or just a positive comment on the efforts of another.  And after those little things we are more in a mindset for peace than before.  There is one God for all of us, so if we have peace on earth between all different people of the earth, then we have maintained or honoured the unity of the Spirit.

You see there is one body of Christ.  Regardless of your background or belief system, if you believe in Jesus Christ, then you are part of the one body of Christ.  You are part of the Universal body of Christ, you are part of the Catholic body of Christ or the Catholic Church.  As I write these last words, I and almost hear  the objections being thrown back at me.  You see the idea of the original Catholic Church, was a universal church, a church that embodied everybody, Jew and Gentile, from every walk of life, from every background, from any part of the world.  The original idea was a truly universal organization.  Over the last two thousand years for too many reasons to mention, in such a small article, the Catholic Church has been polarized into something that we thing of as the “Catholic Church”.  It is sometimes difficult to recognize that it was supposed to have been the new religion for everybody, without any exceptions.

You see there is only one God, and that one God is for everybody.  That one God is the Father of all of us.  God is above all of us, God works through all of us in diverse ways, and God is in us all.  Despite all the religions of the world, there is only one Jesus Christ, who came for the entire world and not just for one religion or denomination.  So the Church of true Christians was probably imagined as the Catholic Church all those years ago, but it did not really achieve what its name described it as.

We can embrace the concept of the Catholic Church, whether we are Hindus, Muslims, Budhists, Catholics or Protestants.  To us Catholic should refer to the one and only God, and to the one and only Jesus Christ.  Whether we use the name Catholic or not, the concept is the same.  Which is that Jesus Christ came to this earth to give everybody the opportunity of choosing to unite with God, or to continue in the old ways, with a extremely small percentage of success.  By that I mean of all the billions of people alive, only a miniscule number have been able to unite with God, without taking advantage of Atonement for sin.  All you need to do is to pray the prayer of redemption, or get people that you love to pray the prayer of redemption, because you have already done it, and your name will be written in the book of life, and that is a promise that Jesus Christ gives to us.

The Prayer of Redemption
