13th Sunday after Pentecost  –  18th August 2013 (Colour of Celebration – Green)
Intent:  Good Works
Grant us, O Lord, to hold fast within our hearts thy love, which doth always prevent and follow us; that so, loving thee above all things, we may continually be given to all good works; through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Liturgy shows us that by faith we put all our hope in Jesus, for He is our refuge; and we ask for the virtue of charity, which renders us lovers of the divine law, and practisers of it.  Let us pray for an increase of Faith, Hope, and Charity.

Commemoration of the Saints, for the coming week

The feast of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mary began her journey along the road to perfection at a height to which other Saints arrived only at the end of a long life of saintliness.  In all other children of Adam original sin prevented the divine generosity from having a free course.  But Mary was created immaculate, and therefore the grace of God streamed into her soul without check or hindrance.  Her sinlessness, her heavenly purity, directed every action, every movement to God.  Her Heart was the pattern and model of all virtues, of all purity!  “Blessed are the pure in heart!”.

Friday August 23rd

Homily:
The material for this week brings up the old argument about whether or not it is possible to get into Heaven by means of Good works.  Well the answer is, yes it is possible, and the scriptures hold examples of those people who did make it.  For example we look at Abraham, Moses, the Prophets, and many others in the bible; these are all examples of both men and woman who managed to make their way into the Kingdom of Heaven by means of good works.

Now many people will tell you that there is no way, that you will ever get into Heaven through good works.  You know that they are right.  The few examples of righteous men and woman who successful applied the lessons in the scriptures of the Old testament, and made it all the way into the Kingdom of heaven as a result, as compared to the billions of people alive today for example.  Now if you compare a possible few hundred who made it into heaven with good works, against the billions of people on Earth, who will not make it into heaven through good works, then you can say with confidence that you will not make it into Heaven through Good works.

So why are Good works and Charity emphasized so heavily then, if they will not get you into Heaven?  We have to get things into perspective here, to properly understand how all these things fit together, and taken in context are not only relevant but true for all of us.  Christ Jesus came down to this Earth, so that he could die on the cross, and rise again after three days, and go back to Heaven to be with his Father in heaven.  By doing this the billions of people alive today have a chance of getting into the Kingdom of heaven.  The process is Atonement for sin, or as Martin Luther coined it “Justification by faith”.  Atonement and Justification are the same concept, described in different ways; actually a very good example of semantics, how by describing the same thing in a different way, you are able to differentiate it, and make it appealing to a group of people, who may not have appreciated the original concept for whatever reason.  So we find that for nearly two thousand years of Christian history we have Atonement for Sin, and then with the advent of the Protestants (protestors), we find the same thing being promoted as Justification by Faith.

So Christ Jesus enables anybody on Earth to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, instead of just a few hundred, who manage to crack the code of good works, and keeping the commandments of God.  Good to point out here, that Christ Jesus did not come just for the Jews or the Gentiles, but for all the nations of the world.  Now typically you will find that different nations or races tend to have different religions.  Christ Jesus came for everyone.  Christianity was supposed to be for everyone, of every Race, Culture, Religion, and Creed.  Christ Jesus came for all the people on this earth.  That is why the early church was named the Catholic or Universal church.  Somewhere during the last two thousand years; Christianity seems to have become more and more just for Christians.  Now especially the more fundamentalist brands of Christianity will claim, that their specific community, is the only one that is going to go to Heaven.  They will tell you that everyone who is not a Christian is going to hell when they die.  I spoke to a friend at the “Hatfield Christian Church” in South Africa.  He told me that all the other churches were going to Hell, except the Hatfield Christian church people.  The Catholics were going to burn in fire and brimstone together with all the other religions of the world.  I managed to get him to agree that the traditional Baptists would not be going to Hell, and then our time ran out.  This is the Fundamentalist point of view, and we need to enlighten such fundamentalists.

Instead of standing and condemning everybody else, we should be telling them the Good news that Christ Jesus came to save all of us on this Earth.  It does not matter your Race, Religion or Creed, Christ Jesus loves you, and came to make it possible for you to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

All of us whatever our religion worship God.  The step that we need to make is to recognize that all the different religions are worshipping one and the same God, because there is only One God in the end.  Now this same one God, God the Father sent his only begotten Son Christ Jesus, to die for us and rise again on the third day, and ascend into heaven.  Then we need to recognize that Christ Jesus came for everybody on earth, and not just a select few, as we have been mistakenly taught.

So Christ Jesus is returning for the Jews, and the Gentiles, the Hebrews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Budhists, Taosts, and all the others.  Now here is the shocker; Not everyone who calls upon my name will enter into the kingdom of heaven.  There will be those who have cast out demons in the name of the Lord, but will not be entering into the Kingdom of Heaven.  Why is this, do you know?

Now here is the clincher, in order to get into heaven, you must hear the Will of God and do the Will of God.  Let’s expand that concept in a way that it never gets expanded.  The Will of god is revealed to us in the Holy Scriptures, which could be the Holy Scriptures of any of the Major religions for example.  Having read that scripture, you have become aware of what the Will of God is.  You must then do the Will of God.  If the Will of God is to Love your Neighbour, then you need to actively go out and love your neighbour, because this is the Will of God.  So from whatever religion you are, you become aware of the Will of God, and you put it into practice, and go out and do it.  If you become aware that the Will of God is to Love your God with all your heart, then that is what you need to do.  So regardless of which Holy scriptures you are reading, you need to establish what the Will of God is for you, and you need to do it.  This is how you get into Heaven.

So you interrogate the Holy Scriptures, discover the Will of God, and do it.  You do the Good Works, making sure that you remain within the Will of God.  You see the Good Works are not getting you into Heaven, but they are improving your position in heaven, if you already have your tickets to get past the gates of Heaven.  Now let’s look at that soul who called out “Lord, Lord, I have even cast out demons in your name”, yet he did not have the tickets to go through the Gates of Heaven.  Casting the Demons out is a Good example of Good works, but he had not remained or aligned himself with the Will of God, so the Good works were of no use to him.  In actual fact he had not started off by establishing what the Will of God was, and doing whatever was required.  If he had, then he would have had the pass to get into heaven.  Casting out Demons in the name of the Lord, would have been part of building a special house for himself in the kingdom of Heaven.

Doing the Will of God is like building your house on the rocks, so that when the storm comes the house, which is symbolically your Good works, can withstand whatever the storms of life, and even of death have to offer.  The house stands, and symbolically your soul has its ticket to get past the gates of heaven.  Note, you must not read the Will of God in the King James Version of the bible, or the revised standard version in order to succeed, but any translation that you are comfortable with will do it.  You need to listen to the word of God.  So you need to read the Holy Scriptures that are available to you, find out what the Will of God is and do it.  Maybe somebody reads it to you, or in a time of quite or prayer or meditation, it becomes clear to you what the Will of God is.  Once you know what the Will of God is, you have to do it.  When you do the Good Works, you need to first do what is Gods Will, and then you can do the good Works.  Otherwise you do the Good Works in vain.  Otherwise you are building your house on the sand.

Now let’s look at the man who builds his house on the sand.  He does everything that the man who built his house on the Rocks does.  The building of the house can be compared to the doing of the Will of God, and doing the Good works.  The beauty of the house can be compared to the Good works.  The foundation of the house is that it should have been built on the Will of God.  If the foundation is not right, then we will have a disaster.  Symbolically a man arrives at the gates of heaven, and presents this beautiful house as his ticket to get past the gates of Heaven.  But there is no foundation, and so the ticket is not valid.  This beautiful structure of Good works comes toppling down, because it is Good works, without the foundation of doing the Will of God.  So the man is turned from the gates of Heaven, even although he has built this beautiful mansion to live in.  By contrast a man arrives at the gates of heaven with a small humble house, that is built on the rocks.  This house is built on obedience to the Will of God.  The foundation is the ticket, and the house stands.  The man enters the Kingdom of heaven, and has this house that he has built with good works, as an abode for himself in Heaven.  Not nearly as impressive as the house that was built on the foundation of sand or not the Will of God.  But then that house is lying in pieces on the sand, it has no value, and cannot be a mansion in the Kingdom of Heaven.

So if you want to check the status of your spiritual house, ask yourself this.
Are the foundations built on the Will of God?  If you are not one hundred percent sure, then go over the reasons why you believed this to be the Will of God.  It may even help to take a piece of paper and write things down.  Did you get this from Holy Scriptures?  If so, then fetch the holy book, open the Holy Scriptures, and verify that you have properly understood what the Will of God is.  Move the house carefully off, onto the sand.  Rebuild your foundations by doing the Will of God.  You are rebuilding your foundations on the rocks. Rededicate the good works, the building and make sure that it is all within the Will of God.  If there are parts that don’t comply, then remove them, and place what is left on the solid foundation.  Now your house is built on the rocks, and your ticket into heaven is valid again.   You have created beautiful structures composed of your Good works.

If you are not sure on how to go about this, then you can pray the Believers prayer.  It is the Will of God to pray the believer’s prayer.  All you need is the short version (which is very powerful), although a slightly longer version is also good.  You can pray the believer’s prayer every day, until it sinks into your heart.  The Believers prayer is building your foundations on the rocks.  After this you can build your heavenly mansion with good Works.

Some Bible References
The believer’s prayer is based on;
John, chapter 3, verse 16.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Luke, chapter 15, verse 21
“And the Son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am nomore worthy to be called thy son.”

James, chapter 4, verse 7
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Colossians, chapter 1, verses 12 to 14
“12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”

The Believers Prayer - short
Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for dying on the cross for my sins.
Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life.
I ask you into my life and heart to be my Lord and Saviour.
Amen.

The Believers Prayer – Long
God, I know that I am a sinner.
I am sorry for my sins, and I ask you to forgive me.
I believe you gave Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place, for my sins, on the cross.
I believe you have forgiven me, and I accept Your Salvation through Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus, I choose to turn from sinning again and to live for you for the rest of my life.
I choose you to be the Lord and Master of my life.
I will be who you want me to be.
I will do what you want me to do.
I will go where you want me to go.
Thank you, God, for hearing my prayer and forgiving me of all my sins.
Amen.

Love Father Franz.

Church History – Article 8:
Collapse
After the fourth and fifth centuries, the next few centuries, saw the whole of Western civilization including the Christian Church in retreat.
The Barbarian invaders swarmed over the once proud Roman Empire in the west.  A strange thing was happening, the Christian church which was once persecuted by the Roman Empire, was now the only institutional link with the Roman past.  The church took advantage of this situation, and built upon the foundations of the long lost glories of Rome.  The Church was able to leverage itself into the position of the dominant institution of the Middle Ages.

In the East, there were a number of national churches emerging.  Gradually these national churches merged together under the leadership of the Patriarch of Constantinople.  Sadly the great Church of North Africa was lost in the year 707, under the onslaught of a new and dynamic religious movement.  The religion of Islam.  Islam officially made its appearance in the Middle East, with the flight of Muhammad from Mecca in the year 622.  From its starting point in central Arabia, the Muslim faith spread rapidly throughout the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa.  By the year 732, Islam had progressed as far as Tours in south central France.  It was finally checked here by the Frankish warrior-chieftain Charles Martel.  Charles Martel was the Grandfather of the Emperor Charlemagne (742 - 814).  You can already begin to see the great philosophical divide that was starting to build up between the Christian Church and Islam.

As a result Christianity was left with two major centres, following the collapse of the Western Empire, that were developing in the early Middle Ages.  One centre was established in Rome, under the leadership of the Pope, the other centre was established in Constantinople, under the leadership of the Patriarch.  The Patriarch was more powerful than the Pope, because he ruled over the richer and more viable part of the Roman Empire in the East, also known as the Byzantium Empire.  In time the Patriarch was forced to become subservient to the Eastern Emperors.  The Eastern Emperors ran both the state and the Church, so the Patriarch ended up with very little power.

In the West, the Pope had to struggle with many temporal rulers for centuries.  However the Pope started to emerge as the most powerful religious as well as political figure, when compared to the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Most of the early medieval society in the west was focussed on just surviving, for nearly five hundred years, during the early Middlel Ages.  This was a turbulent period of history.  The Church had more or less stagnated for nearly five hundred years during this period.  However despite the difficulties, regions of central and Western Europe were evangelized by missionary monks.  Monks who came from the vigorous Christian background of Celtic Ireland.  Monks such as Columba (521 - 597),  Columbanus (543 - 615).  From England came the great Boniface (680 - 754).  Boniface served under both the Papacy, and the Frankish Rulers, and helped to unite Christian Europe.

During the Early Middle Ages the Christian communities in the West were struggling to stem the tide of the Muslims.  They were struggling with the great temporal lords, like Charlemagne for control of the institutional church.  Continuous interference in Church affairs by Temporal leaders, led to the attempt to give the papacy additional powers, to help prevent such intrusions.  As a result successive Popes spent their energy in keeping the Temporal powers from interfering in Church matters.  More important spiritual matters were neglected by the Papacy.  By the tenth century, the papacy and Western Christianity had reached a low point in terms of spiritual power.

A Meditation for all Humanity, The Great Invocation:
This meditation or prayer refers to the Kingdom of God, establishing itself on Earth.
(In place of the word “Christ” below, you may be more comfortable with the term “Lord Maitreya”, “the Imam Mahdi”, “the Bodhisattva”, “the Messiah”, or etc.)

From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let Light stream forth into the minds of men.
Let Light descend on Earth.

From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let Love stream forth into the hearts of men.
May Christ return to Earth.

From the centre where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide the little wills of men
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.

From the centre which we call the race of men
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.

Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.

By using the Invocation and encouraging others to use it, no particular group or organisation is sponsored. It belongs to all humanity.

Benediction:
The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son, Christ our Lord; and the Blessing of God almighty, the Father, + the Son and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always.  Amen.

12th Sunday after Pentecost  –  11th August 2013 (Colour of Celebration – Green)
Intent:  Self-Dedication
Almighty and everlasting God, grant that we may ever increase in faith, hope and charity; and, that we may quickly attain that for which thou hast destined us, may we love the path which thou hast ordained; through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

We have been initiated into spiritual life by the Sacrament of Baptism, and strengthened, perfected, by the sacrament of Confirmation.  The Feast of Pentecost has celebrated the efficaciousness of Baptism and Confirmation: the graces and fruits given by the Holy Ghost.  The Church recalls in the Liturgy today the duty of charity which derives from them.

The Vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Liturgy of the Mass celebrated on this day is a fitting preparation for to-morrow’s ancient and solemn Feast of our Lady.

Thursday August 15th
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mary was cared for by St John for twelve years after our Lord’s Resurrection.  Her life was spent in helping the Apostles and in praying for the conversion of the world.  On the third day after Mary’s death, when the Apostles gathered around her tomb, they found it empty.  The sacred body had been carried up to the celestial paradise.  Jesus Himself came to conduct her thither; the whole court of heaven came to welcome with songs of triumph the Mother of the Divine Word.

Friday August 16th
St Joachim, Confessor, Father of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Homily:
The intent for today is self-dedication.  To what are you going to dedicate your life’s efforts? What have you dedicated your life to, so far?  As a theme, let us look at Saint Mother Theresa.  Yes she gave her life to the Lord, as the Protestants would say.  Why did she go on, and dedicate her life to the service of humanity, when she was already justified by faith, or already had her place secured in Heaven?  She could have just sat back and enjoyed the ride that is life, knowing that at the end of the road, she would be passing through the Gates of heaven, and that her name would be recorded in the registers.  Her place in Heaven was secure, but it was not enough.  Christ Jesus once said: “In my Father’s house there are many mansions”.  Saint Mother Theresa was not going to be happy with the bare essentials accommodation in Heaven.  Are you going to be happy with the bare essentials in Heaven?  Yes you have believed in Christ Jesus, and dedicated your life to Christ Jesus, you have been baptized, and have the certificate to prove it.  Some of you have even been baptized with fire or with the Holy Ghost.  Some of you have been confirmed, and have the certificate to prove it.  All this is great, but are you going to be satisfied with your status in heaven one day.  Are you going to be satisfied when humble servants live in magnificent mansions in heaven, and you have to make do, with the absolute bare minimum.  Yes you will be in heaven, we are not debating that point.

Christ Jesus pointed out that he had not come to destroy the law or the prophets, but to fulfil the law and the prophecies.  You see we are living under the New Covenant, see the “Anglican Catechism” below, for more details on the New Covenant.  It is not that we are not subject to the law anymore.  We will still have to satisfy all of the law, down to the very least point that is recorded in the scriptures.  Even if we slip up on the very least of these laws, we will end up as being the least in Heaven.  We will be in heaven, because of the Atonement for Sin, or to put it another way, Justification by faith.  Most of us are happy to live more or less the same life, that we would have lived anyway, before we became a Christian, because we know at that back of our heads, that we will be going to heaven in any case.  How many people do you know that live a life that is very connected to the sins of this world, but on Sunday they dedicate themselves to the life they will one day live in Heaven?  How do you feel about this?

Well on the other hand if Christ Jesus had not offered us this wonderful opportunity of atonement for sin, by his dying on the cross, then there would have been very few people, who could have measured up to the stature of the Scribes and the Pharisees, in order to secure a place in Heaven.  If you think about it, Christ Jesus has created an opportunity for billions of people to get into heaven, that would not otherwise have made it.  This also implies, that most of them will be in the least or the humble or the bare essentials part of Heaven.  Would you be happy to be in this part of heaven, with probably close to 100% of the others who made it into heaven?

We have the tools to get into heaven, thanks to Christ Jesus.
Firstly there is Atonement for Sin or justification by faith, which are different ways of describing the same concept.  This tool is enough to get you through the gates of heaven.

Secondly we have the law of love.   Love your neighbour as yourself.  Now if you truly get this one right, you will have satisfied all the other requirements of the law in the Old Testament.  This is the tool that we can use to improve our positions in Heaven.  This is the tool that Saint Paul worked so hard with, this is the tool that saint Mother Theresa used so seriously.  In order to properly use this tool, your life has to operate in Love.  You have to operate every day in Love.  Now when hardship and temptation come across your path, this is an opportunity for bonus heavenly points, or for losing points with relation to your position in heaven.

When something bad happens to you in life, you have the opportunity of edifying your eternal position in Heaven, or for downgrading your position in Heaven, and even in some extreme circumstances, losing your pass for the Gates of Heaven.  If your life goes smoothly and everything goes the way it should, you have been cheated in a way.  You have been cheated out of all the opportunities for building your mansions in heaven, or for choosing not to accept Christ Jesus into your life, and choosing to live in the after-life as a spiritual outcast, or as some would say in Hell.  Remember that lessons of an eternal nature only come with pain and affliction.  So next time you find yourself afflicted with pain, next time when life happens, and the most horrific things come your way; take the opportunity, to build your mansions in Heaven.  Give thanks for the eternal opportunity.  Otherwise your feelings and emotions, and ponderings on why God allows certain things, will drag you down, and in extreme cases, may even forfeit your ticket for the Gates of heaven.  Give thanks for your pain and affliction, because this is your enemy, and Christ Jesus calls us to love our enemies.  Turn your discomforts and misfortunes into treasures in Heaven, see them as a bonus.

Love Father Franz.

Church History – Article 7:
A Golden Twilight
The fourth century marked a radical turning point in the history of Christianity.  The institutional church started to grow rapidly, theology became more sophisticated.  The church has its roots firmly set in the fourth century; with regards to the Eastern Orthodox church of the Byzantine empire, as well as the Western medieval Latin Catholic church.  On a broader perspective the protestants are also firmly rooted in the fourth century, with their rich history which they inherited from the Catholics, and the constant desire to recapture early Christianity.  Also in the fourth century, because the world did not have communications, as we can enjoy today; the western Christians started to lose contact with the Christians in the East.  This was also a major contributor to development in different ways in the East and the West.  Eventually Christianity entered a period of spiritual recession in the early middle ages.  Some believe that the incorporation of Christianity as the one and only official religion of the Roman empire in 395, had much to do with the recession.

Before the spiritual recession set in the Church went through a stage of “Golden Twilight”.  It was at this time that the church was blessed with spiritual giants like: Ambrose (339 - 397), Augustine (354-430), and of course Pope Gregory I (540-604).  The church was experiencing the last of the Western Church Fathers, and it was truly a Golden Twilight.  The church fathers were building and developing the theological of the Christian faith.  They were building and improving the institutional church.  Not to mention the great progress that was going into the spiritual development of the church.  During the fourth and fifth centuries the hierarchical structure of the church grew and developed.  To me the most important developments were on the increasing emphasis on Liturgical worship, and the heavy emphasis on the sacraments, especially Baptism.  Baptism was taught as the process of salvation through the institution of the church.  The Christian church it seemed had done well by allowing itself to become the official religion of the Roman Empire in the year 395.

However there were other historical influences that were also taking place during the same period of time.  The Roman Empire had been suffering from internal decadence, and in the fifth and sixth centuries, the Roman Empire suffered invasion.  Perhaps because Christianity had become entrenched in the Roman Empire to the extent that it had, the decay of the Roman Empire affected the church as well.  As the foundations of the Mediterranean world started to decay, Christianity started to decay as well, and it was clear that the Golden Twilight had come to an end.

(Next week we look at the collapse of the Christian church in the early middle ages)

An Anglican Catechism  – Article 7:
The New Covenant
=> What is the New Covenant?
The New Covenant is the new relationship with God given by Jesus Christ, the Messiah, to the apostles; and, through them, to all who believe in him.

=> What did the Messiah promise in the New Covenant?
Christ promised to bring us into the Kingdom of God and give us life in all its fullness.

=> What response did Christ require?
Christ commanded us to believe in him and to keep his commandments.

=> What are the commandments taught by Christ?
Christ taught us the Summary of the Law and gave us the New Commandment.

=> What is the Summary of the Law?
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is the first and the great commandment.  And the second is like it:  You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

=> What is the New Commandment?
The New Commandment is that we love one another as Christ loved us.

=> Where may we find what Christians believe about Christ?
What Christians believe about Christ is found in the Scriptures and summed up in the creeds.

(Next week we will look at the creeds)

Prayer:

[Protestants can optionally add:  For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.]
Amen.

Homily:
Today is all about the ability to discern what is really happening to us on this Earth.  Christ Jesus tried to give us some clues, that were clothed in the level of understanding of the day.  The Christ pointed out that when most of us see a cloud rising out of the West, we are immediately able to say, that rain is coming.  You see we are able to read the sign that is presented by the cloud and to interpret it correctly to say that rain is expected in the near future.  Again another illustration out of nature, when we see the South wind blowing we all immediately know that we are in for a hot period.  The lessons are geared to working with and understanding nature, because we ourselves are also part of nature.  In fact we form the forth Kingdom of nature.  Mineral, vegetable, animal, and human.  We are truly the ultimate creatures that currently walk this earth, all in harmony with the laws of nature.  Or we should be in harmony with nature.

Shame on those individuals who on a regular basis are introducing herbicides and pesticides into nature.  Those individuals with nothing but profit as the ultimate result who are poisoning our earth; killing our fauna and flora, all for temporary financial gain.  Those individuals who are poisoning trees and killing trees, for no more reason than, “I don’t like that tree”.  God is love, and we are called to love all of creation, which includes the four kingdoms.  A bit short sighted to say you love your neighbour, yet you are killing trees, and introducing horrific poisons into the ecology.  You may as well administer the poisons directly to your neighbour.  That is why when you declare your love for your neighbour, it has the hollow sound of shallowness, and insincerity.  I speak here of lack of discernment.  The lack of discernment displayed by so many of us who are destroying our inheritance from God.  Let me ask you this, when last did you spray ant poison in your house to get rid of ants?  With a bit of research you may have found that you could have used something like citrus essential oils to have a similar and less destructive effect on Nature.  In fact something that smells strongly of orange peels, will chase the ants away.

We are supposed to be focussing on Discernment and not the lack of it.  The Christ points out that when the signs of the times point to the fact that the Kingdom of Heaven will soon be establishing itself on Earth, we are not able to recognize it.  In fact it has become so confused, that almost every year; some religious fanatic will declare that on new year’s day, the world will end.  We are in fact so tired of these predictions that never come true.  What are we missing, why can’t we see what is really happening?

You see Christ pointed out that we should; “Rather seek ye the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.”  Again that is something that we choose to see through the spectacles of lack of discernment.  What does it really mean to seek the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven.  Well it certainly has nothing to do with listening to somebodies idea that the world will end on a certain date.  You see when the Kingdom of Heaven establishes itself on Earth, the Earth will have a renewed and healthy vitality.  We will have renewed love for all of the kingdoms.  Mineral, vegetable, animal, Human, God.  Yes God will then be part of the fifth kingdom, the kingdom of God on earth.

So what must we do, in order to seek the Kingdom of God?  I believe that this is a very active process that needs to be followed.  We need to start loving the four Kingdoms that God has giving us.  Loving the minerals, and repairing the damage that we have allowed with soil erosion, climate change etc.  We need to fix these things up.  We need to love the mineral world, and not because of the financial riches that can be gained from it, that is lust.  We need to love the vegetable world.  We need to do everything that we can in order to make the lot of living plants better than they were before.   It is our duty to carry water to plants on a hot day.  It is our duty to dig natural organic fertilizers into the ground, and not the damaging synthetic and poisonous kinds.  It is our duty to give love to the animals around us.  Do something good for an animal everyday.  If we can’t stop the extinction of the Rhinos, then we are not ready for the Kingdom of heaven, we need to do far more for the Rhinos, than we are currently doing.  We need to love the Rhinos, and all the creatures of God’s creation, it is really that simple.  No magical mysteries here, it is just love.  How do we stop people from killing our beloved animals?  How do we demonstrate to God that we are ready for the Kingdom of God to descend to Earth.  We need to love our human neighbours as we love ourselves.  This is seeking the Kingdom of Heaven, simply by loving what God has already given us.

Then comes the righteousness of God.  Many of us just read over that one, and either ignore it or simply explain, that it means that we must stop being naughty boys and girls.  You are wrong, we are in for a surprise when we are faced with the righteousness of God.  The righteousness of God refers to the power of God.  This power is not something that you can measure in kilowatts or other measurement systems.  This power is the power of purification, the burning of us to reveal anything that is of some value within ourselves.  For those of us with no intrinsic value, with no Love, we will simply be burnt up.  The power of God is the power that created the Universe, and can destroy the Universe again.  The power of God, or the righteousness of God will destroy everything that does not match up to “Love”.  Everything will be rebuilt again, and we will be part of the Kingdom of God.  The Kingdom of heaven on Earth.  Are you ready for the Kingdom of God?  If you are, you need to start actively working towards it.  All it needs is love, you have to actively love God’s creation, that is all.

In the Epistle, we still see a reference to Kingdom of God but in a more subtle way.  In order to really understand what it is all about, we need Wisdom, we need discernment, spiritual discernment.  Now if you try to explain these things to the people around you, it would be surprising if they understood.  The mysteries of the coming Kingdom of God are revealed to us through the Spirit of God.  You see we need to be baptized with water and with fire.  The baptism with fire is the baptism with the Holy Spirit.  It is only after you have been baptized with the Holy Spirit, that you can start receiving the Wisdom, the understanding of what is really happening, from the Spirit of God.  The understanding of what it really means to seek the Kingdom of God.  The understanding of what it really means for the Kingdom of Heaven to establish itself on Earth.

Once we have been through the spiritual fires to become a member of the Kingdom of God on Earth, then there are to be many amazing advantages.  Firstly your physical body will be much improved, and will last for many centuries if not thousands of years, instead of the very short period it currently lasts for.  Disease will disappear, and this is probably as much because of advanced technology revealed by the Holy Spirit, as for any other reason.  Carnivores and Herbivores will play together.  Now that describes to me a tremendous breakthrough in animal psychology, that is not just something that is going to magically happen.  You see if we don’t really understand how animals think, and what makes them do the things that they do, and how to modify their behaviour, then do we really love them?

Spiritual man will be able to understand these things of the coming Kingdom of God, because he has been baptized with the Holy Spirit, and become a spiritual human.  Natural man who does not have the advantage of the Spirit of God within themselves to give them spiritual discernment, will not be able to understand the things of the coming kingdom of God.  Natural man will in fact reject these ideas of the Kingdom of Heaven, because he does not have the Discernment that is given by the Spirit of God.  By man I refer to the Sanskrit meaning, which equates mankind to that creature that is able to creatively think.  So there is in fact no sex in the word man or mankind, I am in fact speaking of mankind on a higher level, on a level that is more in line with the coming Kingdom of God.

“Rather seek ye the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Love Father Franz.

Church History – Article 6:
A State Religion
The Christian faith had become firmly established in the Roman Empire, by the time of the death of Emperor Constantine in 337.  In 313 Emperor Constantine was converted to Christianity the previous year, and made Christianity a recognized religion of the Empire, elevated to the same status as all the other state religions of the Empire.  By 395 it was recognized that Christianity formed the majority of all the other state religions, and Christianity became the only official state religion.

You can also think of it like this, in less than four centuries since the birth of Jesus, Apostolic Christianity had taken on the mighty Roman Empire and conquered it.  This step followed the leadership of Armenia who some years earlier had adopted Christianity as its official religion.  Also in parts of Africa and Western Asia, the spread of Christianity had made significant progress.  By the year 395, the new religion was on the brink of significant known world victories.  However there was a down side to it all; As Christianity had swept across the Greco-Roman world, Christianity had lost some of its original simplicity and zeal.

Through aggressive evangelism Christianity had won astounding victories, and had gone from persecution to the official state religion.  The preaching of the Gospel to hundreds of thousands of people; the message of peace and hope that the crucified and risen Christ Jesus brought them.  Furthermore, early Christianity had already attracted a wide range of intellectuals to the faith who were successfully able to refute attacks on the new faith by Pagan intellectuals.  Persecutions had instead of limiting the growth of Christianity, been one of the reasons for its astounding growth.

Perhaps the greatest change in the relationship between the Greco-Roman empire and Christianity took place in the year 312, with the conversion of Constantine to Christianity.

The adoption of Christianity as the official religion in 395, was also the reason for the serious damage to spirituality under the banner of Christianity.  Christian leaders became the confidants of Roman Emperors, which tended to detract from the spiritual zeal in the Christian leadership.  The period after 395, also marks the beginning of the fall of Christianity, from its Apostolic purity.  From 395 onwards the emphasis started to become more about the right relationship between church and state, instead of the zeal, simplicity, and aggressive evangelism of the early church.  For many of us the year 395 marked a very sad day, in terms of spiritual development within the Christian faith.  The role of any religion is supposed to be first and foremost to aid its members towards spiritual development.  Most of the world religions are not completely successful with regards to aiding their members towards spiritual development.  From the year 395 onwards, Christianity also started to be less effective in its role of spiritual development for its members.  The persecution had stopped, but was the horrific cost, that the development of Christianity suffered worth it?  Was the subsequent damaged development of the church worth it, in any way at all; the tremendous price that Christianity paid in aligning itself to the Roman Empire in 395?

An Anglican Catechism  – Article 6:
God the Son
=> What do we mean when we say that Jesus is the only Son of God?
We mean that Jesus is the only perfect image of the Father, and shows us the nature of God.

=> What is the nature of God revealed in Jesus?
God is love.

=> What do we mean when we say that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and became incarnate from the Virgin Mary?
We mean that by God’s own act, his divine Son received our human nature from the Virgin Mary, his mother.

=> Why did he take our human nature?
The divine Son became human, so that in him human beings might be adopted as children of God, and be made heirs of God’s Kingdom.

=> What is the great importance of Jesus’ suffering and death?
By his obedience, even to suffering and death, Jesus made the offering which we could not make; in him we are freed from the power of sin and reconciled to God.

=> What is the significance of Jesus’ resurrection?
By his resurrection, Jesus overcame death and opened for us the way of eternal life.

=> What do we mean when we say that he descended to the dead?
We mean that he went to the departed and offered them also the benefits of redemption.

=> What do we mean when we say that he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father?
We mean that Jesus took our human nature into heaven where he now reigns with the Father and intercedes for us.

=> How can we share in his victory over sin, suffering and death?
We share in his victory when we are baptized into the New Covenant and become living members of Christ.
